We sailed by The Ruben E. Lee restaurant and I shot a picture of it. It is located on Harbor Island near the San Diego International airport. It is where I had my first "real" date so many years ago. The Ruben E. Lee iss a replica of an 1880s Mississippi paddle wheeler and was built on a barge. I do not know if it is currently open - last I heard, a 9 million dollar renovation was underway.

Nice shot, it looks a fine replica. That's a stiff bill for a renovation, I hope it's worth it.

I was a bartender there between 1976 and 1979. Those were the days I'll never forget. I came from the midwest to vacation one week. On a whim I applied there and got a job.
I also went on my first FANCY restaurant date there back in the 70's. I remember how cute my date looked all dressed up.I remember the the dress I wore, and watching the sunset through the windows reflecting on the bay. And I had lobster for dinner..... that was a BIG deal for college kids back then. Sigh.... great memories. My cute date is old, I'm old and the Reuben E. Lee is old and we're all falling apart.
The Reuben E. Lee is going to be scraped off the barge and a bar and seating area will be built.
It breaks my heart! I hope the owners will have someone salvage the woodwork and the windows. The wood is so beautiful and warm, and you don't see craftsmanship like that anymore.
I had my "last" date/dinner at the Ruben E. Lee before leaving for the Air Force in 1971. It was a great dinner, lobster, and one of my high school classmates was our server. Fun times. Sorry to see it go.
My Parents took me & my brother there in the summers in the mid-late 70's when my father took us on annual business trips to San Diego....we also went to the Bali Hai & Anthony's. Such wonderful memories....forever cherished.....Love my parents & brother. Loved the sunsets even though I was only 8 - 14. Would love to share with my children.
